Group Fitness

YMCA group fitness programs are developmentally appropriate and help people at any stage of life build positive health habits.  Participation in YMCA programs offers youth and adults opportunities for friendship and community, a sense of well-being, increased self-confidence and improved mental abilities. The Winona Family YMCA Health and Wellness Department focuses on the physical, mental and spiritual development of its members. The benefit of exercise is essential to the overall feeling of well-being. Exercise has attributed to lowering the incidences of heart attacks and strokes, as well as being an excellent means of weight-control, and the building of bone strength. YMCA group fitness programs are developmentally appropriate and help people at any stage of life build positive health habits.  Participation in YMCA programs offers youth and adults opportunities for friendship and community, a sense of well-being, increased self-confidence and improved mental abilities.

ALTERNATIVE HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING

Angelo’s Alternative High Intensity Training (AHIT) is a powerful interval class designed to give the athlete or experienced fitness enthusiast a super challenging and highly guided workout. Under the watchful eye of Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) Angelo Giaquinto, you will improve athletic performance by powering through exercises like: plyometric box jumps, speed work, Olympic barbell lifts, hammer/tire smashing, ball slamming, along with plenty of quick-twitch agility training. Two longer duration cardio sets are included to round out the workout. Experience an increase in strength, muscular endurance, tone, speed, agility, flexibility, balance, raw power, and cardiovascular conditioning. Workouts last approximately one hour with a specific timed work-to-rest ratio in 12 dedicated circuits. Classes are limited to 12 participants.

· SESSION I: Tuesdays, May 6 - June 24, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

· SESSION II: Fridays, May 9 - June 27, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.,  OR 10:00 - 11:00 am

The Winona Family YMCA is proud to welcome Carol Kohner as an instructor for therapeutic yoga. Carol is an Occupational Therapist who holds a master’s degree in Public Health. She has achieved a 200 hour yoga certification through Yoga Alliance and is currently working towards her 500 hour certification. Carol and the Y are excited to offer therapeutic yoga classes. These classes focus on specific health issues and are led with a high degree of individually focused instruction.

This class incorporates gentle movement and various therapeutic techniques. It will help with issues of arthritis, fibromyalgia or other ailments. The goal will be to increase mobility and strength without excess wear and tear on joints. Joint alignment principles will be addressed routinely with each movement.

Alexandra Economy, MS, RD, LD makes lives easier, healthier and happier as the registered and licensed dietitian at the Winona Hy-Vee. She has a bachelor’s degree in dietetics from UW-Stout, and a master’s degree in professional development from WSU.
