The Winona Family YMCA is proud to be a crossroads for all people, whether from different social worlds to different economic worlds.
We are a community.
We are passionate about community. But after almost 135 years, the Y’s sense of community has become harder to maintain because our current building physically inaccessible to many. Our new Y will give us the tools to be more efficient and suited for today's needs, allowing us to renew our commitment to the community!
A BRIGHT FUTURE
The new facility is located between Winona Health and the beautiful East Lake Winona; and will be modern, accessible to all, more efficient, sustainable, and welcoming.
It will be designed for our specific community needs.
Our new 65,000 square foot building will transform the Y and create a revitalized community partner poised to offer the facility and programs that our community needs and deserves, including:
Better accessibility with much more parking.
Modern, bright, and inviting fitness, weight, and group exercise facilities.
A light-filled 6-lane pool with co-ed sauna, whirlpool and steam room right on the pool deck for safer enjoyment.
A mixed-use gymnasium.
Fully ADA compliant space with an elevator and universally accessible design.
Energy efficiency that benefits the environment and the bottom line.
Home of Winona Health’s Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, and Occupational Therapy services.
Office space for community partners Live Well Winona and American Red Cross.
The new facility is projected to greatly increase membership, restoring the Y’s revenue engine and generating the funds needed to support community service programs and scholarships.
Why do we need a new YMCA?
Our current facility is outdated, inefficient, and inaccessible to many in our community. It has become a barrier to membership and threatens our ability to provide many of the Y’s crucial services. A new facility will revitalize the Y, increase member retention, and boost membership upon opening, providing much needed revenue for years to come.
What will happen to the current YMCA building?
We have sold our current building, but have an agreement in place to stay in the space until construction is complete on the new facility.
Where will the new YMCA be built?
902 Parks Avenue, on the campus of Winona Health facing Lake Winona.
When is the new Y going to open?
The YMCA broke ground in the summer of 2019, with a scheduled completion date of October 2020.
Will there be a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool facilities in the new building?
There will be a co-ed sauna, steam room, and whirlpool on the pool deck for all members to use. Locating these on the pool deck will help keep our members safer because there will be Lifeguards around.
What considerations were given to the design of the new facility?
We worked hard to balance the constraints of the site and our budget against what we have heard from our members and both local and national Y market data on what features will attract and serve the most people in the community. Our mission as a Y is to serve as great a cross-section of the community as we can. Broad, robust membership is how Y’s remain financially sustainable and able to provide financial aid as well as low- and no-cost programs.
Will member rates increase?
That is yet to be decided, although we do expect strong growth in membership numbers that will help us keep any increases as modest as possible.
Will the Y continue to offer Financial Aid and Scholarships?
Yes. In 2018, with the help and generosity of our donors we were able to provide $180,000 in scholarships for programs and memberships. Our new building will strengthen our economic engine, helping ensure that we can continue to provide support to those in need in our community.
How will the project be funded?
The project is being funded by a mix of private donors, community fundraising, the sale of the current facility, and New Markets Tax Credits.
Does my membership fee support the Capital Campaign or construction costs?
Membership fees are crucial for the general operation of the facility and Y mission work, but do not cover construction costs. We invite you to give to the Capital Campaign with a separate one-time gift or multi-year pledge.
Why will Winona Health, Live Well Winona, and the American Red Cross all have space in the new Y?
All of these partner organizations have missions and visions that align with those of the Y. They have a health and wellness focus, and are responsive to community needs. Sharing space represents a shared vision of improving the health and well-being of children, adults and families in our community through shared resources and capitalizing on organizational strengths. These partnerships will transcend all ages and socio economic backgrounds, and expand each organization’s impact in our community.
Will each organization have access to each other’s spaces?
Not exactly. Winona Health’s space will only be accessible to their providers and patients. Some of their patients may use the Y space as part of their step-down rehabilitation care. The American Red Cross and Live Well Winona will have office space in the Administration area of the Y. We are excited for more opportunities to work together and collaborate on new program opportunities.
How can I support the Capital Campaign?
You can have a huge impact in supporting the project and our community through a charitable contribution of any size. It is the community that will build this community center and the community that benefits from and supports the long term viability.
